Union Hospital has a long and proud
history of delivering the finest quality medical
services in a compassionate health care environment.
Founded as Memorial Hospital in 1944 at the height of
World War II by five osteopathic physicians, the 23-bed
hospital was originally housed in a Victorian mansion in
Elizabeth purchased for $17,000. In 1962, it was
expanded to an 82-bed facility in the historic “five
points” section of Union, where, for the past 44 years,
it has grown and expanded to meet the health needs of
the community.
In 1993, Union Hospital became part of
the Saint Barnabas Health Care System, which
currently has eight hospitals and more than 22,500
employees.
This affiliation has enabled the
hospital to strengthen and expand its offerings, as well
as to keep pace with the many advances in medical
technology.
Today, Union Hospital is a 174-bed
community teaching hospital serving more than 60,000
individuals each year. Offering a wide array of acute
care services, it is considered a major health care
resource to Union County. In 2003, the hospital opened a
state-of-the-art Center for Surgery offering the
foremost in technology and surgical services, and in
2005, they added the groundbreaking new Center for Sleep
Medicine.
