This special section
contains profiles of certain doctors in Union County.
The following doctors chose to participate in this
special section and have provided information about
their training, specialties and practices as an
informational service to our readers.
MARIA E. ALEXIANU, MD,
PHD
Dr. Alexianu established her neurology practice in
Summit and Westfield in 2005. She started practicing
Neurology at New York University in New York City, where
she holds a teaching appointment with the department of
neurology.
She has hospital privileges
at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ and NYU Medical
Center in Manhattan.
Dr. Alexianu graduated from
the Neurology Residency program at New York University
School of Medicine and graduated with a fellowship in
neuromuscular disorders and electromyography at the
Neurological Institute of Columbia University Medical
Center in NYC. Prior to her clinical training, Dr.
Alexianu was a research scientist on faculty at Baylor
College of Medicine in Houston, where she focused her
efforts on studying neuromuscular and neurodegenerative
diseases. She published numerous
papers in first-rate peer-reviewed journals. However,
her love for clinical work and patient interaction made
her turn her career to the patient care pathway.
Dr. Alexianu is a Diplomate
of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and
provides consultations and care for general neurological
issues such as headaches, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis,
movement disorders, stroke, muscle, nerve, and spine
disorders. She is also a Diplomate of the American Board
of Electrodiagnostic Medicine and has extensive
experience in electromyography and nerve conduction
studies used in the diagnosis of neuromuscular
disorders.
Treating every patient as
she would treat her family, she provides extensive
interviews and examinations, taking time to listen and
fully answer questions. Her patients leave the office
feeling they are in trustworthy hands. Her office
staff’s priority is positive, caring patient interaction
where every patient’s concerns are handled with care and

ASSOCIATED ORTHOPAEDICS
Associated Orthopaedics was
started in Union by Dr. Botwin in 1976. An area
resident, Dr. Botwin grew his practice into Bayonne as
well. He was one of the New York Metro Area's Top
Doctors and is a founding member of the Arthroscopy
Association of North America. He was a past president of
the New Jersey State Osteopathic Society and is
currently the Chief of Surgery at Union Hospital. Dr.
Botwin first became a pharmacist and then received his
Medical Degree from the Osteopathic Medical School in
Kansas City, Missouri. He received his residency
training at the Delaware Valley Medical Center in
Langhorne, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Innella, also one of the
New York Metro Area's Top Doctors, then joined Dr.
Botwin in 1987. He is a Founding Fellow in the
Osteopathic Sports Medicine Society and specializes in
joint arthroplasty. Dr. Innella has been chief of
orthopedics at Union and Bayonne Hospitals. He attended
the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and
then served as a resident at UMDNJ-Kennedy Health System
in Stratford, New Jersey.
Dr. Warshauer joined
Associated Orthopedics in 1995. As a senior resident he
obtained one of the highest combination scores on his
written and oral board exams. He received additional
trauma training in Germany. Like Dr. Innella, Dr.
Warshauer received his medical education at the
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, after
which he became a resident at UMDNJ-Kennedy Health
System.
Dr. Faccone joined the
practice in 2000 after completing a Fellowship in Sports
Medicine at Temple University. He obtained the nation's
highest score on the written board exam and now
specializes in arthroscopic surgery and the care of
athletic trauma and sports injuries. Dr. Faccone
attended the Osteopathic Medical School in Des Moines,
Iowa. He also served as a resident at UMDNJ-Kennedy
Health System in Stratford, New Jersey.

JOSEPH T. BARMAKIAN, MD
Joseph T. Barmakian, MD, is board certified in
orthopaedic surgery with additional certification in
hand surgery. A New Jersey native and Westfield
resident, he graduated from Bucknell University and
attended Rutgers Medical School where he graduated with
honors. Dr. Barmakian received his training in
orthopaedic surgery at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical
Center in New York City, and then completed a fellowship
in hand surgery at the Hospital for Joint Diseases-Orthopaedic
Institute. He was elected to both the American and New
York Societies for Surgery of the Hand. He is a member
of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the New
Jersey Orthopaedic Society and the Medical Society of
New Jersey. Dr. Barmakian’s practice is limited to the
treatment of disorders involving the hand, wrist,
forearm, elbow and shoulder. A wide range of hand and
upper extremity disorders are treated in patients of all
ages. Fractures, tendon, nerve and ligament injuries,
arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and rotator cuff
disorders are some of the conditions he treats. Dr.
Barmakian has been practicing in New Jersey since 1990.
