     :: Spotlight on Trinitas Hospital

Trinitas Expands Cancer Program

While the Trinitas Comprehensive Cancer Center in Elizabeth has been open for less than a year, they have already announced the official opening of a satellite office in Union. The 2780 Morris Avenue satellite was formerly the Hematology and Oncology Associates of New Jersey office, run by Dr. Fred Steinbaum and Dr. Vincent Salerno, who recently united their practice with the Trinitas Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“Everyone at Trinitas shares our passion for outstanding medical care and excellent customer service, focusing not just on the patients, but also on providing support for
their family members,” says Dr. Fred Steinbaum, associate medical director at the Trinitas Comprehensive Cancer Center. “This Union satellite office lets us provide more accessible services for the Union County community.” Dr. Steinbaum began his affiliation with Trinitas in early April. He is widely published and has held various positions with many of the region‚s most respected cancer programs for over 30 years. Dr. Steinbaum did his fellowship in medical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and was the chairman of the Department of Hematology and Oncology at Union Hospital.

Dr. Vincent Salerno, who also joined Trinitas in early April, did his fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at Saint Vincent's Hospital in New York, is the author of several significant research papers and has taught at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and New York Medical College. He is board certified in medical oncology, hematology and internal medicine. “The response from our hematology and oncology patients has been overwhelmingly positive,” says Dr. Salerno. "Our
patients in Union County now have greater access to the comprehensive multidisciplinary services, advanced technology, support services and clinical trials available at the new comprehensive center and the convenience of a Union office.”

The Trinitas Comprehensive Cancer Center is located in a new 28,000-square-foot, five-story building on the campus of Trinitas Hospital in Elizabeth. The Center offers the most advanced technology available to cancer patients, including the first Trilogy Linear Accelerator for radiation therapy in New Jersey.

“New Jersey has one of the highest cancer rates – 16 percent above average, and Union County is among the highest counties in NJ in terms of cancer incidence,” notes Trinitas Hospital president and CEO Gary S. Horan, FACHE. “The new center is now the gold standard for cancer care in our region. “There are only a handful of other cities in the country with the Trilogy system. This technology meets or surpasses all other existing technology, making Trinitas Comprehensive Cancer Center a regional leader now and into the foreseeable future.”

GROWTH IN A SHORT PERIOD
In just six short years, Trinitas Hospital has grown into an accepted health care provider of choice in Elizabeth, Union County and beyond. Formed from the merger of St. Elizabeth Hospital and Elizabeth General Medical Center in the year 2000, Trinitas has grown into the full confidence of the medical staff, patients and the community at large. This is evident in the increasing use of our key services.

“Perhaps most striking is the fact that in just 6 years Trinitas is delivering on the promises made during the consolidation process,” Horan says. “We have preserved and expanded services in the community. We continue to provide the latest in healthcare technology. We’ve eliminated the financial losses endured by the two hospitals prior to the merger. We’ve enhanced the local work environment, and we succeeded in further expanding our outreach to the poor and vulnerable. People come from throughout the region and beyond to access our award winning services. We feel now as we did then that the merger of these two hospitals was the right thing to do for the community. Trinitas Hospital is being recognized with awards that acknowledge its quality, programs, and exceptional work environment.

AWARD-WINNING CARE
Last fall, Trinitas was the recipient of the Award for Excellence as an Outstanding Employer by the New Jersey Business & Industry Association (NJBIA). This award recognizes the many successful initiatives we’ve undertaken to enhance recruitment and retention programs, and to become an Employer of Choice.

Further validation of our successful work environment came from NJBIZ, which recently named Trinitas Hospital in the top 20 “Best Places to Work in New Jersey.”

In the field of state-of-the-art wound treatment, The Center for Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine at Trinitas Hospital continues to distinguish itself among its fellow centers that are part of the Praxis Clinical Services system of wound healing centers across the country. The Center at Trinitas has been part of the Praxis Clinical
Services system since. “We learned recently that the Center was recognized by Praxis for achieving a 95-plus percent patient satisfaction and was also designated as a Center of Excellence,” Horan said. “We’re very proud of our Center, which since 1997 has provided state-of-the-art treatment to many thousands of patients,” Horan states.

The hospital’s marketing and public relations initiatives were recognized by the Jersey Shore Public Relations & Marketing Association, which gave their top award to the website which we developed to promote our Sleep Disorders Center. This resource is available by visiting: www.NJSleepDisordersCenter.com.

The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), which awarded Trinitas with full, continued accreditation. In particular, JCAHO surveyors highlighted the Trinitas Hospital staff’s commitment to patient care, patient safety and quality.
