Brearley BEARS
Head Coach:
Scott Miller
2005 Record: 10-2-0
North Jersey 2, Group I
Mountain Valley - Valley
9/08 CARDINAL
MCCARRICK 7 p.m.
9/21 DAYTON 7 p.m.
9/30 @ New Providence 1 p.m.
10/06 CRANFORD 7 p.m.
10/14 @ Rahway 1 p.m.
10/21 ROSELLE PARK 7 p.m.
10/28 @ JFK (Iselin) 1 p.m.
11/03 HIGHLAND PARK 7 p.m.
11/23 @ Hillside 10:30 a.m.
KEY PLAYERS:
QB Anthony Evans: He’s established now, so
he
won’t be catching teams off guard like he did in
2005.
TE Eric Schindler: Possibly the most
talented player
in Union County. He’s one reason Evans is a good
bet
for a repeat performance.
RB John Dalman: Enormous shoes to fill,
but
without an effective running game, Evans and
Schindler become more neutralized.
DE Jesse Boyden: All-county end is
expected to be
a leader on the highly rated Bears defense.
FS Tom Mannix: He’s a slender 5-10, 160,
but should
make an immediate impact in the secondary.
OUTLOOK: Anthony Evans and Eric Schindler
provide
a lethal passing combination, while John Dalman
is
waiting in the wings as the tailback. Thankfully
for
Brearley, their defense is returning nine of 11
starters
from a squad that allowed just a hair over six
points
per game last year. |
Cranford COUGARS
Head Coach:
Erik Rosenmeier
2005 Record: 6-4-0
North Jersey 2, Group 3
Watchung - National
9/08 RAHWAY 7
p.m.
9/15 WESTFIELD 7 p.m.
9/22 @ Newark East Side 2 p.m.
9/29 @ Linden 7 p.m.
10/06 @ Brearley 7 p.m.
10/13 KEARNY 7 p.m.
10/20 SHABAZZ 7 p.m.
10/28 @ Scotch Plains – Fanwood 1 p.m.
11/04 @ Irvington 2 p.m.
KEY PLAYERS:
QB Simon Smith: Replacing 1st team
all-county QB
Mark Zamorski. But at 6-4, 190, he looks to be
growing into a prototypical QB. Was 2nd team
all-county last year as a defensive back.
DT Robert Foster: Possibly the only
significant cog
on the defensive line.
HB Dan Gargiulo: Has to step into the
shoes of the
departed Chris Brown, which is no small task.
OT Bryant McCue: Unproven and undersized
at 6-2,
200 pounds, McCue will have to pull his weight
in the
spread option offense.
OUTLOOK: Cranford lost an impressive
group of
players last year, most notably on the offensive
line
and on defense. The emergence of Frank Benimeo
and Sean Scanlon as Smith’s protectors is
integral to
the success of Cranford’s offensive attack.
Expect
second-year coach Erik Rosenmeier to at least
match
his 6-4 mark from last year. |
Elizabeth
MINUTEMEN
Head Coach:
Chet Parlavecchio
2005 Record: 6-4-0
North 2, Group 4
Watchung - American
9/8 PLAINFIELD 7
p.m.
9/16 @ Hudson Catholic TBA
9/22 UNION 7 p.m.
9/30 IRVINTGON 1 p.m.
10/06 SHABAZZ 7 p.m.
10/21 @ Westfield 1 p.m.
10/27 @ Linden 7 p.m.
11/04 @ Newark East Side 2 p.m.
11/22 SCOTCH PLAIN – FANWOOD 7 p.m.
KEY PLAYERS:
QB Michael Eargle: Has the arm and the legs
to
keep opposing defenses off-balance, leaving
holes in
coverage and receivers open.
WR Kasiem Greene: Large, solid target for
Eargle,
in addition to anchoring the stellar linebacking
corps.
G Richard Tabor: Lending senior
experience on an
underclassman line.
DT Hafiz Williams: The Junior is starting
for his
third straight year.
LB Basim Hudeen: Uber-talented and ready
to lead
Elizabeth’s top-notch defense.
HB Jadeeh Mayers: Still unproven as a
sophomore,
but if he’s ready, he’ll take some pressure off
Eargle.
OUTLOOK: New coach Chet Parlavecchio has
had
success in previous jobs, and could certainly
return
Elizabeth to glory. If their defense plays to
its potential, they could be looking at a 9-0 or
8-1 season and a berth in the playoffs. They
certainly have the weapons. |

Gov Livingston
HIGHLANDERS
Head Coach:
Terry Hanratty
2005 Record: 6-4-0
Central Jersey, Group 2
Mountain Valley - Mountain
9/09 ROSELLE 1
p.m.
9/16 JOHNSON 1 p.m.
9/21 NEWARK CENTRAL 4 p.m.
9/21 @ Bishop Ahr 7 p.m.
10/14 HILLSIDE 2 p.m.
10/21 @ Rahway 1 p.m.
10/28 NEWARK EAST SIDE 1 p.m.
11/03 @ North Plainfield 7 p.m.
11/23 @ New Providence 11 a.m.
KEY PLAYERS:
DE/TE Matt Boyer: A future Division I
player, Boyer
will play a larger role in the Highlander’s
offense than
he did last year.
TB Matt Zimmerman: Will take plenty of
pressure
off a relatively inexperienced QB.
QB Tyler George: The offensive line
should give him
time to made decisions.
LB Joe Natale: A three-year returning
starter at a
premium defensive position.
OUTLOOK: The stellar blocking
capabilities of Nick
Matthes and Eric Toglia will enable Boyer to run
patterns, which will make up for the lack of a
dominant wide receiver on this Highlanders
squad.
Matt Zimmerman will have plenty of holes to run
through. Defensively, the Highlanders are
capable but
not overpowering. They’ll allow 15-20 points per
game, but their offense should be able to top
that
mark consistently. |
Hillside COMETS
Head Coach:
Jim Hopke
2005 Record: 3-7-0
Central Jersey, Group 2
Mountain Valley - Valley
9/09 PASSAIC 1
p.m.
9/16 RAHWAY 1 p.m.
9/30 @ Johnson TBA
10/07 NEWARK CENTRAL 1 p.m.
10/14 @ Governor Livingston 2 p.m.
10/21 ROSELLE 1 p.m.
10/28 NEW PROVIDENCE 1 p.m.
11/04 @ Spotswood 2 p.m.
11/23 BREARLEY 10:30 a.m.
KEY PLAYERS:
QB Jerron McMMillan: Nothing quite like
senior
leadership at quarterback.
WR Justin Matthews: Received a
scholarship to
Stony Brook. Now he has to put up the numbers to
back it up.
LB Marhsall King: Omnipresent linebacker.
CB Tshepo Moshobiaba: Very capable in the
defensive secondary.
OUTLOOK: The biggest problem facing the
Comets is
the questionable nature of their offensive and
defensive lines. They have playmakers at most of
the
skill positions, but without big men up front,
their
talents could go for naught. The emergence of
even
one player on each line could mean the
difference
between a 5-5 team and another 3-7 performance. |
Johnson CRUSADERS
Head Coach:
Gus Kalikas
2005 Record: 7-3-0
Central Jersey, Group 2
Mountain Valley - Mountain
9/16 @ Governor
Livingston 1 p.m.
9/23 @ Roselle 1 p.m.
9/30 HILLSIDE 1 p.m.
10/7 HACKETTSTOWN 1 p.m.
10/14 NEW PROVIDENCE 2 p.m.
10/21 @ Spotswood 1 p.m.
10/27 @ Newark Central 1 p.m,
11/04 JFK (ISELIN) 2 p.m.
11/23 RAHWAY 10:30 a.m.
KEY PLAYERS:
QB Ryan Burnett: It takes a special QB to
run the
option with any consistency, and this will be
Burnett’s
third year in the system.
TB Vin Reis: A perfect complement to
Burnett, Reis
uses his track star speed to elude defenders.
DT Oliver Haney: He’ll open up plenty of
space for
the linebackers. His contribution on the
offensive
line can’t be underestimated, either.
WR Alex Ochocki: A large target at 6-3,
he’s the
perfect dump-off target for Burnett. He’ll fit
in
perfectly with the option offense.
OUTLOOK: With 17 returning starters,
Johnson could
prove dominant. Their schedule doesn’t feature
any
big problems, and an undefeated season is
completely within the realm of possibility. On
the
defensive side, they should be fine against the
run
with Haney on the line, though their secondary
does
come into question. |

Linden TIGERS
Head Coach:
Bucky McDonald
2005 Record: 6-4-0
North Jersey 2, Group 4
Watchung - National
9/09 @ Westfield
1 p.m.
9/16 @ Shabazz 1 p.m.
9/29 CRANFORD 7 p.m.
10/6 IRVINGTON 7 p.m.
10/14 @ Scotch Plains-Fanwood 1 p.m.
10/20 PLAINFIELD 7 p.m.
10/27 ELIZABETH 7 p.m.
11/03 OLD BRIDGE 7 p.m.
11/23 @ Union 10:30 a.m.
KEY PLAYERS:
FB George Bease: Had a 170-yard and 140-yard
game last year before breaking his leg and
missing the
rest of the season. Could be the difference
maker.
QB Jerry Jones: You have to expect a lot
from any
returning QB, and Jones is no different.
LB Jared Robinson: Undersized at 5-10,
165, but he
can pack a punch. He’s the most underrated
aspect of
a solid linebacking corps.
DE Muhammad Wilkerson: If medically
cleared to
play, this 6-5, 240 pound defensive end can
wreak
havoc on an opposing offense.
OUTLOOK: Their 4-4 defensive scheme
should keep
teams in check against the run, but many holes
may
emerge in the secondary. At 6’2”, 350 pounds,
Junior
DT Benjamin Newton has a real chance to anchor
the
defensive line amidst DEs Rosario and Devon
Enrique.
This is a largely upperclassman team that should
mix
well with 22-year veteran coach Bucky McDonald. |
New Providence
PIONEERS
Head Coach:
Frank Bottone
2005 Record: 7-4-0
North Jersey 2, Group 1
Mountain Valley - Mountain
9/15 @ Newark
Central 7 p.m.
9/24 RAHWAY 1 p.m.
9/30 BREARLEY 1 p.m.
10/06 @ Roselle Park 7:30 p.m.
10/14 @ Johnson 2 p.m.
10/21 DAYTON 1 p.m.
10/28 @ Hillside 1 p.m.
11/04 @ Roselle 2 p.m.
11/23 GOVERNOR LIVINGSTON 11 a.m.
KEY PLAYERS:
QB Derek Gibbons: With the running game
unknown
entering the season, Gibbons will have to
improve
upon the eight touchdowns he threw last season.
TE Paul Carroll: Caught five of Gibbons’s
eight
touchdowns last year, and should catch a
proportional
amount this year.
OT Tim Dempsey: He’s going to be bearing
the load
of a suspect running game.
FB Steve Siracusa: If the Pioneers can
find a consistent
running attack, Gibbons can shed a lot of
burden.
OUTLOOK: The defense doesn’t boast a slew
of the
state’s top players, but it has always been a
strong
point for New Providence, and surely played a
huge
role in their 7-4 record in 2005. They’ll be
able to hold
their own in the tough Mountain division, but
bouts
with Brearley, Johnson, Governor Livingston, and
the
always formidable Rahway could derail the
Pioneers
playoff hopes. |
Plainfield
PIONEERS
Head Coach:
Clinton Jones
2005 Record: 6-4-0
North Jersey 2, Group 4
Watchung
9/08 @ Elizabeth
7 p.m.
9/16 IRVINGTON 1 p.m.
9/23 SHABAZZ 1 p.m.
9/30 @ Scotch Plains-Fanwood 1 p.m.
10/07 HACKENSACK 2 p.m.
10/14 UNION 2 p.m.
10/20 @ Linden 7 p.m.
11/03 @ Bridgewater-Raritan 7 p.m.
11/23 WESTFIELD 11 a.m.
KEY PLAYERS:
QB Dyshaun Allen: A big “if” for the
Cardinals.
He’s going to be under plenty of pressure early
on,
with three tough games to open the season. If he
falters there, he may be reverted to a running
back.
OT Marc Williams: One of two senior
tackles that
have the ability to take pressure off Allen.
TB Reggie Dixon: He’s mainly a special
teamer, but
his emergence could save the Cardinals season.
DT Justin Robbins: The 320-pound tackle
is the
highlight of the defense, and could be joining
Williams on the offensive line later in the
season.
OUTLOOK: It all depends on your take on
Allen as a
quarterback. He’s a speedy guy, making him a
good fit
for the option offense. However, he may be more
suited for the tailback spot, which will
initially be
handled by the committee of Joshuah Morgan and
Brandon Lynn. They’re going to be reliant on
their
defense to match their 6-4 mark from 2005. |
