Rahway INDIANS
Head Coach:
Gary Mobley
2005 Record: 8-3-0
Central Jersey, Group 2
Mountain Valley - Mountain
9/08 @ Cranford 7
p.m.
9/16 @ Hillside 1 p.m.
9/24 @ New Providence 1 p.m.
9/29 @ North Plainfield 7 p.m.
10/14 BREARLEY 1 p.m.
10/21 GOVERNOR LIVINGSTON 1 p.m.
10/28 ROSELLE 1 p.m.
11/04 NEWARK CENTRAL 2 p.m.
11/23 @ Johnson 10:30 a.m.
KEY PLAYERS:
TB Deion Lawson: The massive offensive line,
checking in at an average of 260 pounds per
player,
should open up plenty of lanes for Lawson.
QB Troy Eastman: Won a pre-season battle
with
Corey Alfano, who will line up with Lawson in
the
backfield. Eastman has to play knowing that
Alfano,
both figuratively and literally, is right behind
him.
LB Donte Dennis: Stepping into the role
of the
graduated Andre Neblett. He’ll be more of a
speedster than a hard hitter.
DE David Colvin: The Indians sack leader
(10.5 in 2005) returns to knock heads up front
in Rahway’s 4-4 defense.
OUTLOOK: Rahway received a more than
adequate
influx of players, compensating for the
considerable
graduation losses, including a few now
Division-I
players. If they have matters in order early in
the
season, the rest of the season could be a
smashing
success for third-year head coach Gary Mobley. |
Roselle RAMS
Head Coach:
Chris Satterfield
2005 Record: 3-7-0
Central Jersey, Group 1
9/09 @ Governor
Livingston 1 p.m.
9/23 JOHNSON 1 p.m.
9/30 @ Newark Central TBA
10/07 KEARNY 1 p.m.
10/14 NEWARK EAST SIDE 1 p.m.
10/21 @ Hillside 1 p.m.
10/28 @ Rahway TBA
11/04 NEW PROVIDENCE 1 p.m.
11/23 @ Roselle Park TBA
KEY PLAYERS:
QB Harold Hood: Big move from fullback to
quarterback, but he should have an adequate
backfield to break him in.
TB Taj Martin: Quick back that can make
defenses
look foolish.
FB Jamar Phelps: Versatile back who will
be a key
cog in the offense.
DT Dan Ruiz: One of just three returning
defensive
starters.
OUTLOOK: A team without a defense is one
that can
potentially finish 3-7 two years in a row. The
underclassmen will have to step up in order for
Roselle to improve on their mark from last year.
Their
schedule doesn’t provide much relief. Also
lacking is
the offensive line, putting even more pressure
on new
QB Harold Hood. |
Roselle Park
PANTHERS
Head Coach:
James Foy
2005 Record: 6-4-0
North Jersey 2, Group 1
Mountain Valley - Valley
9/09 @ Metuchen 1
p.m.
9/15 @ Middlesex 7 p.m.
9/22 HIGHLAND PARK 7:30 p.m.
9/30 @ Dayton 1 p.m.
10/06 NEW PROVIDENCE 7:30 p.m.
10/13 @ Newark Central 7 p.m.
10/20 @ Brearley 7 p.m.
10/28 CARDINAL MCCARRICK 7:30 p.m.
11-23 ROSELLE 10:30 a.m.
KEY PLAYERS:
QB Marc Garcia: The third-year varsity
player presents the dual passing-running threat
envied by so many.
DT Ryan Henry: Moves better than possibly
any
other 290-pound defensive lineman.
DB Alan Williams: With the Panthers 5-3
defensive
scheme, a lot of weight falls on the shoulders
of the
secondary. Williams has to step into the shoes
of a
secondary facing the loss of two three-year
starters.
LB Burim Kadrijaj: His veteran presence
gives the
Panthers a solid option at each level of
defense.
OUTLOOK: Losing four of five starters on
the
offensive line is usually detrimental, but if
anyone
can overcome it, the versatile Marc Garcia can.
His
speed out of the backfield will help him elude
wouldbe
tacklers and open up the offense. On defense,
they’ll need all they can get from Garcia,
playing
safety, Henry and Kadrijaj and hope for the best
from
the underclassmen. |

Scotch
Plains-Fanwood RAIDERS
Head Coach:
Steve Ciccotelli
2005 Record: 3-7-0
North Jersey 2, Group 3
Watchung – National
9/08 @ Shabazz
TBA
9/16 NEWARK EAST SIDE 1 p.m.
9/22 @ Irvington 1 p.m.
9/30 PLAINFIELD 1 p.m.
10/14 LINDEN 1 p.m.
10/20 @ Union 7 p.m.
10/28 CRANFORD 1 p.m.
11/04 Westfield 1 p.m.
11/22 @ Elizabeth 7 p.m.
KEY PLAYERS:
WR Kyle Rowbotham: Came on during 2005 as
one
of the top wide receivers in the county.
TB Greg Brand: Experience lends itself to
a newbie
quarterback.
QB Mike Chervenyak: Stepping into a new
role
may be tough for the Junior, but he should fare
better
than his predecessor.
OG Steve Wenson: Needs to reestablish
himself
after missing much of 2005 with an injury.
OUTLOOK: The listed key players may all
be on the
offensive side of the ball, but that does not
mean the
defense isn’t top-notch. Conversely, they have
plenty
of returning players that should prove
frustrating for
fellow Watching-National conference teams. With
Rowbotham and Brand on offense and the
experienced defense, Scotch Plains is a near
lock to
improve upon their 3-7 record in 2005. |
Summit
HILLTOPPERS
Head Coach:
George DiGrande
2005 Record: 1-9
North Jersey 2, Group 2
Iron Hills - Hills
9/09 MENDHAM 1:30
p.m.
9/16 WEST ESSEX 1:30 p.m.
9/22 PARSIPPANY 1:30 p.m.
9/30 @ Chatham 7:30 p.m.
10/7 HANOVER PARK 1:30 p.m.
10/14 @ Parsippany Hills 2 p.m.
10/20 @ Dover 7 p.m.
10/28 WHEEQUAHIC 1:30 p.m.
11/04 MORRIS HILLS 2:30 p.m.
KEY PLAYERS:
QB Edgar Ozols: He can only hope that he can
lead
the Hilltoppers to a better mark than 2005.
TB Travis Marchell: Certainly the
brightest spot on
the offensive side.
WR Dave Rodiut: Provides some senior
leadership.
DL Sam Rose: A good defense starts with a
solid
line, and Rose will be the anchor.
OUTLOOK: A 1-9 team in 2005, George
DiGrande’s
Hilltoppers don’t project much better in 2006.
While
the focus is certainly still on this year, the
emergence
of Junior Ozols could mean bigger things for
2007.
Summit is also victim of playing in the
considerably
tough Iron Hills Conference, Hills Division.
With zero
in-conference victories last year, even one
conference
win may inspire some confidence. |
Union FARMERS
Head Coach:
Marc Crisafi
2005 Record: 10-2-0
North 2, Group 1
Watchung – American
9/09 @ Irvington
1 p.m.
9/15 MONTCLAIR 7 p.m.
9/22 @ Elizabeth 7 p.m.
10/7 @ Westfield 1 p.m.
10/14 @ Plainfield 2 p.m.
10/20 SCOTCH PLAINS-FANWOOD 7 p.m.
10/27 BRIDGEWATER-RARITAN 7 p.m.
11/03 @ Shabazz 3 p.m.
11/23 LINDEN 10:30 a.m.
KEY PLAYERS:
QB Jim Melody: The pressure will be on to
help
exceed Union’s 15.45 points per game from last
year.
OT Desmond Stapleton: Sizable (6’5”, 300)
tackle
that should offer Melody plenty of protection.
TB Chris D’Andrea: Speedy tail back will
be relied
on when using the option and the spread
formations.
FB/LB Isa Abdul-Quddus: Useful when Union
utilizes the I-formation. More valuable on
defense as
the only returning linebacker.
DT Kyle Dickerson: One of only three
returning
defensive starters.
OUTLOOK: The Farmers had plenty of holes
to fill this
year, and it looks like they did an adequate
job. Their
defensive secondary remains in question.
Stapleton
should open up plenty of holes for D’Andrea, who
came onto the scene in his first start last year
– in a
first-round playoff victory over Plainfield. |

Westfield BLUE
DEVILS
Head Coach: Jim DeSarno
2005 Record: 1-9-0
North Jersey 2, Group 4
Watchung - National
9/09 LINDEN 1
p.m.
9/15 @ Cranford 7 p.m.
9/22 @ Kearney TBA
10/7 UNION 1 p.m.
10/14 @ Irvington TBA
10/21 ELIZABETH 1 p.m.
10/27 @ Shabazz TBA
11/4 SCOTCH PLAINS-FANWOOD 1 p.m.
11/23 @ Plainfield TBA
KEY PLAYERS:
QB Tommy Bonard: Edged out Mark Boyd for the
starting job, and will have to work hard to keep
it.
TB Ryan Yarusi: Will have plenty of help
in the
backfield with a three-man rotation at fullback.
Also
serves as a linebacker on defense.
LB Will Harbaugh: Team had trouble with
runs to
the outside and passes over the middle. Harbaugh
will be integral in solving that problem.
OT JT Sheehan: Anchors an experienced and
able
Blue Devil offensive line.
OUTLOOK: New head coach Jim DeSarno could
certainly improve on the team’s dismal record
from
2005. The only question left is by how much.
Westfield
is certainly playing above their heads in North
Jersey
Section 2, Group 4, which is never fun for an
incoming
coach. While there is plenty of talent present
on this
Blue Devils team, their schedule far too brutal. |
Dayton BULLDOGS
Head Coach:
Joe Goerge
2005 Record: n/a (3-5 in JV)
North Jersey 2, Group 1 Mountain Valley - Valley
9/08 @ Highland Park 7 p.m.
9/15 @ Manville 7 p.m.
9/21 @ Brearley 7 p.m.
9/30 ROSELLE PARK (at Millburn) 1 p.m.
10/06 @ Ridgefield 7:30 p.m.
10/14 @ Cardinal McCarrick 4 p.m.
10/21 @ New Providence 1 p.m.
10/27 @ Bound Brook 7 p.m.
11/04 @ Metuchen 2 p.m.
KEY PLAYERS:
DE Eric DuBeau: The first concern is always the
run,
and DuBeau is Dayton’s run-stopping answer. He
doesn’t have much help.
QB Jason Cappa: His inexperience beyond the JV
level could be troublesome. He’ll face a real
challenge early in the season when Dayton faces
Brearley on the 21st.
WR Aaron Weinbaum: Cappa’s best weapon,
though his effectiveness will hinge on the
successs of
the running game.
OUTLOOK: It’s tough to expect much from a team
that has been without a varsity football team
for
six years. However, Dayton’s freshman team
finished 4-3 in 2005, sending glimmers of hope
through the system. |
