TIPS FOR HEALTHY HOLIDAY
EATING FOR DIABETICS
The Center for Healthy Lifestyles is a group of services
designed to improve fitness and health. The Diabetes
Self-Management Center is an American Diabetes
Association-recognized center that helps people control
their disease and provides them with the skills,
knowledge and motivation to stay healthy. The Center for
Health
Lifestyles provides group or customized weight-loss
programs. While open to all who would like to lose
weight, the programs are especially beneficial for
people who are obese, those with an immediate family
member with diabetes, those with high blood pressure,
elevated cholesterol, or impaired glucose tolerance.
“We started off working with
patients with diabetes, but we quickly realized that
anyone can benefit from a program to eat more
nutritionally and lose weight sensibly,” says Angela
Bacque, pharmacy and diabetes program manager.
They will be bringing back
the popular “Holiday Taste Testing” program this year,
Bacque says. The event will be on Nov. 9, from 7 to 8:30
p.m.
“People who are working to
control their diabetes and weight are particularly
challenged during the holidays,” Bacque says. “They do
one of two things — say ‘the heck with it,’ and lose
control or they get depressed because they feel they
can’t enjoy any of the holiday food,” she says. “This
program provides these patients and the people who will
be cooking and preparing holiday meals and goodies the
opportunity to explore different recipes that are
appropriate for those managing their diabetes and
weight.”
Local chefs will be
preparing holiday food and those attending can try
samples and take home recipes.
