CHEN'S 22

Chen’s 22, located in the Echo Plaza on Route 22 west in Springfield, serves both Chinese and Japanese cuisine in an upscale yet cozy, Asian themed dining room. The family-run restaurant, which has been in business for almost 12 years, is owned by Gao with his cousin over seeing the kitchen as the head chef. The menu offers all the traditional Chinese dishes, such as the popular chicken and broccoli and sesame chicken, as well as delicious specialties like sea bass and the Peking duck, which is brought to the table still steaming and prepared right in front of you.

For sushi lovers, the menu includes a number of creative sushi rolls such as the “Springfield Roll,” which is a combination of spicy yellowtail, salmon and avocado
topped with crunchy tuna. Another popular item off the special sushi menu is the “Tuna Pizza,” comprised of fresh ginger seaweed salad over a scallion pancake base, served with spicy mayo and your choice of tuna salmon or yellowtail. Chen’s 22 also features a decorative sushi bar, where diners can watch their artistic sushi orders being prepared.

A hot spot at lunch time during the week for ordering take out, Chen’s 22 is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Menu items range in price from $9.25 to $27.95 and reservations for parties of all sizes are welcome. Off-premise catering is also available. Chen’s 22 is a BYOB establishment, so diners must bring their own beer or wine.

DANIELA’S RESTAURANTE ITALIANO

When Rob DelGaudio and his partner Charlie Tornetta took over the site of Angelina’s in April of this year, they set out to bring a bit of Sicily to Kenilworth with their family-style Italian eatery. “We truly are a family-owned and operated restaurant,” DelGuadio says. “My father-in-law is the chef and my sister cooks.” Indeed, the restaurant is even named after a family member — Daniela is DelGuadio’s daughter. The Italian feast at Daniela’s begins with the appetizers. Stuffed artichokes and fried calamari are specialties. Moving to the entrées, the daily pasta specials are always enticing. A staple on the pasta menu is the Frutta Di Mare, a blend of shrimp, clams is a marinara sauce over linguini. For seafood fans, there is the Fillet of Sole Tre Amore, filet of sole broiled and served with sautéed shrimp and calamari with lemon, olive oil and garlic. If meat is more to your liking, the New York Strip Steak is grilled to perfection and topped with peppercorn sauce. If you want to sample a little of everything, try the Three Musketeers, which is veal, chicken and shrimp prepared francaise-style and served over broccoli rabe. For special occasions, the restaurant has a private room that can handle 65 guests comfortably. The restaurant also does outside catering for Christenings, Confirmations, Communions and other special occasions. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 3 to 10 p.m.
